Microsoft releases regular Windows 10 updates to improve security and features. These may be installed by selecting "Check for Updates" from the Windows Start Menu. These may occasionally require restarting the computer. VR Motion tests all regular Windows updates, and they usually have no impact on simulator operation (though Microsoft often displays extra feature notifications, these may be safely dismissed.)
ATTENTION: You may receive a notice in Windows Update that "This PC can run Windows 11".
Windows 11 is a completely different operating system, and many features that VR Motion relies on are not tested. DO NOT UPGRADE any simulator to Windows 11.
Microsoft also releases Windows 10 "feature updates" every year: These updates have names like "21H1", and will not be automatically installed, unless support for the current version of Windows has expired:
- Windows 21H2: Expires June 13, 2023
- Windows 21H1: Expires Dec 13, 2022
- Windows 20H2: Expired May 10th, 2022 (update to Windows 21H2)
- Windows 2004: Expires (update to Windows 21H2)
- Windows 1909: Expired (update to Windows 21H2)
- Windows 1903: Expired (update to Windows 21H2)
If you choose to upgrade your PC with a semi-annual update, you may see a licensing message prompting for an activation code. VR Motion uses the Windows serial number as part of the machine license, so an upgrade might not be recognized as the same PC. Please file a support ticket indicating that you are upgrading your simulator (please include the simulator's PC Name in the email title), and VR Motion will issue an new activation code for that machine.
VR Motion tests these updates in advance of their release, however, Microsoft uses these releases to add new features, so some behaviors of you PC may change. (new Desktop icons, Start Menu items, or taskbar notifications).
